Join us for an evening marking the publication of Water Over Thunder: Selected Writings, a new collection of materials drawn from the full breadth of Larry Sultan’s archives. Featuring a multitude of previously unpublished documents, including contact sheets, found photographs, journal entries, dream diaries, polished essays, and much more, Water Over Thunder reveals Sultan’s inner landscape, artistic process, and reflections.

The evening mirrors the book’s own logic: associative, intimate, and wide-ranging. Invited guests include filmmakers and writers along with Sultan’s former colleagues and students who will read from his writings and consider his work. Two shorts from Sultan’s list of “Five Favorite Films” will be screened along with video footage taken by the artist while making his book Pictures from Home. The experience aims to be a continuation of Water Over Thunder, exploring the largely unknown elements of Larry Sultan’s practice.
